[starttext]
On Tuesday, August 4, a Manhattan judge signed an order that will see former Bad Boy recording artist and onetime Sean "Diddy" Combs protégé Jamal "Shyne" Barrow receive two-and-a-half years of post-release supervision stemming from his 2001 conviction and sentencing in the infamous Club New York case.

An attorney for Shyne — born Jamal Barrow but now going by Moses Levi after converting to Judaism while in prison — said that the order marked one of the last remaining hurdles in the way of his client's release from prison in October.

"He's about 90 percent of the way home now," attorney Oscar Michelin told MTV News following the hearing.

The district attorney's office had recommended Shyne receive the maximum amount of five years of post-release supervision (essentially probation), due to the violent nature of his crime. In June of 2001, Shyne was sentenced to 10 years in prison — the most serious charge he was found guilty of was first-degree assault, after a patron in the club was shot in the face following a melee that started between a group of clubgoers and Diddy's entourage, which included his then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez and Shyne. Shyne brandished a gun and fired shots into the air to break up the argument.

The December 1999 shooting resulted in charges being brought against both Shyne and Diddy, with both of them going to trial. The high-profile incident produced plenty of headlines, from Diddy's red-light running, high-speed exit with Lopez following the shooting to an alleged bribery plot. Shyne was a rising talent at the time, with his husky baritone reminding many in the music industry of legendary Bad Boy Records artist Notorious B.I.G. Diddy signed the youngster and was set on molding him into hip-hop's next superstar before their relationship crumbled after the trial, in which Diddy was acquitted on all counts.

In court, Michelin presented a memo he prepared in Shyne's defense, which was a combination of previous law examples that were similar to his client's case, talk of the rapper's good behavior and testimony from scholars and business executives who support the Brooklyn native's release.

"I'm grateful," a calm Shyne told the judge.

The rapper was hoping to be re-sentenced as a way to avoid post-release supervision, telling the judge that the supervision equates to "extra jail time." It was a strategy he and his lawyer proposed but the judge quickly dismissed, citing a recent court of appeals decision that changed the nature of assigned post-release supervision in New York. As a result of the ruling, a number of previous dependents in cases, including Shyne, have been issued extra supervision following their jail sentences. The judge acknowledged the rules were not in effect when Shyne was initially sentenced, but cases all over the state are now being reexamined as a result of the ruling.

In April, Shyne appeared in court for a parole hearing, hoping to be released early after serving eight years in prison — but the rapper was denied any lenience. Now the rapper has a mandatory release scheduled for October 6 of this year. The date will mark eight years and seven months served; he began his sentence in April of 2001, when he was 22 years old.

Shyne will serve the rest of his sentence at the Sullivan Correctional Facility in Fallsburg, New York.

The last name of my forefathers was taken from them when they were brought to America and made slaves, and then the name of the slavemaster was given, which we refuse, we reject that name today and refuse it. Katt Williams has been accused of taking nearly $4,000 worth of jewelry and collectible coins from a suburban Atlanta home, but another unrelated incident involving the comedian recently surfaced. A 17-year-old claims Williams held him and "threatened" to beat him up if he left the Newman, Ga., estate where Williams lives. Officials stated that the 'Wild 'N Out' star will not be charged for the incident.

Still in search of some southern hospitality in the days following his release from jail. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports, the comedian has also been kicked out of his rented penthouse suite in Atlanta's Four Seasons hotel. Employees claimed Williams was causing a disturbance among other guests. "I haven't been here 72 hours and I'm being kicked out of the Four Seasons even though I paid up front and in cash," he said during a press conference on Thursday evening. "I don't understand. I'm at the point now where I'm standing out here with millions of dollars in movies and TV specials sold and most of them done right here in Atlanta. And to be ceremoniously dismissed at a hotel is sad."

R&B diva Alicia Keys brought the house down for a legendary performance at the Nokia Theater in Times Square that was streamed live on the worldwide web. American Express partnered with the Grammy-winning songstress for this one-night-only event in honor of World AIDS Day and Alicia’s charity Keep A Child Alive, which assists children and families in South Africa who are affected by HIV/AIDS. Miss Keys annihilated the stage for over an hour in a hit-after-hit performance, which included cuts from her new fourth studio album, The Element of Freedom, which is available December 15th.

Being that Keys is still so young, you forget how many hits this R&B chick has had since her debut in 2000 — three number one albums, four number one hits and nine top 10 hits on the Billboard charts. Keys pounded through a set list that included “Karma,” “I Ain’t Got You” and “You Don’t Know My Name.” She also included songs that weren’t huge hits but fan favorites like “Wreckless Love,” “Superwoman,” and a riveting performance of “Diary,” which she sung with the amazing Jermaine Paul, who opened the show. The New York native belted out her latest singles, “Doesn’t Mean Anything” and “Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart,” plus she sang unheard of songs from the new album like “Love Is Blind” and “Distance and Time.”

Alicia was met with some high-octane energy from the New York City crowd and she often acknowledged it, constantly thanking the audience for their undying support in her nearly 10-year career. However, the crowd hit a high when Keys sang her biggest solo hit to date, “No One.” Keys gave us a little vocal improvising, proving she is not just radio-friendly — she is soul-friendly.

We all couldn’t help but wonder if she would sing “Empire State of Mind” being that she is in New York and the song is such a massive hit — could the song be done without Jay-Z? Thankfully, no one had to worry because Jay-Z hit the stage spitting out the now legendary lyrics with Keys wailing for New York. Everyone in the packed theater went into a frenzy — no other song was more fitting for a city that has survived so much and is still celebrating the Yankees win.

An excellent performance from Keys, but the night wasn’t solely about her, as she continued to stress. American Express and Alicia Keys donated all ticket proceeds from the sold-out show to her charity Keep a Child Alive.

76 year old James Privott is back home in his Windsor Mill neighborhood where he is still recovering physically and emotionally. His wife, who refused to go on camera, said she must monitor him 24 hours a day. The couple's lawyer Renee Swafford told ABC2, "We are saddened by the events and had hoped in 2009 we would have moved further along in race relations."

As for the two teens charged in connection with the beating, police said they're still not sure why 17 year old Emmanuel Miller and 16 year old Zachary Watson became involved with Lockner. We are really not in a position to know the full extent of their beliefs or a lot about their lives," said Baltimore City Police Commissioner Fred Bealefeld. City police picked up 17 year old Emmanuel Miller and 16 year old Zachary Watson. According to charging documents, Watson implicated Miller during questioning. "They are being charged as adults, both of them being charged with attempted first degree murder and charges related to the theft of the vehicle," said Commissioner Fred Bealefeld. But the two teens will not be charged with a hate crime. Police say that falls entirely on Calvin Lockner, his Hitler tattoo and his membership to the Aryan Brotherhood. In charging documents, both teens blame Lockner for the racially-motivated beating of 76 year old James Privott while he was fishing with his wife early Tuesday. At this point, investigators say they're not sure why the teens were involved. "We are really not in a position to know the full extent of their beliefs or a lot about their lives," said the commissioner. Back on the dock at Fort Armistead Park in South Baltimore, there's relief following these new arrests. "Very good. I like to see that. We need more police patrol in this area if it is going to happen again we gotta stop it before it happens," said fisherman Patrick Rucker. But it was more than just solid police work that helped to put all three suspects in jail. The department says it was flooded with tips from the Curtis Bay community "In this case, you know people did the right thing".

[starttext]
Mike Tyson, a figure of staggering complexity and iconic impact on the
world stage, has been a friend since 1985 when he came by the set of THE
PICK UP ARTIST to meet Robert Downey. We spent hours talking-- about love,
madness, crime, sports, sex, boxing, money, and death. I was left with a
certainty that I would eventually want to use him in some future film. Fourteen
years later, I offered Tyson a role in BLACK AND WHITE which involved resisting
successive, aggressive sexual overtures by both Downey and Brooke Shields,
and, in another scene, the providing of advice to a Wu Tang Clan gangster
on murder and its possible consequences of a life in prison. Three years later, I
used Tyson again in a street scene with Neve Campbell and me in WHEN WILL
I BE LOVED.

For years I have been looking for a project that would allow for a new
form of presentation suggested by current radically shifting and radically
impatient responses to modern life and media. I wanted to make a movie
that would serve the thematic complexity and multiple layers of character
and behavior by splitting the screen into separate images moving in shape,
size, and rhythm, complicated by overlapping sources of dialogue and music.
A full portrait film with Mike Tyson as its subject not only allowed for the
exercise of that technique but actually demanded it. I approached Larry
McConkey, the world master of steadicam operators and asked him to try a
two-camera (both the Panasonic Genesis and Vericam) Hi-Def shoot of rapid
intensity. Tyson was free, willing, and--after years of vaguely planning such an
enterprise---eager.

The week passed with the expected, unexpected twists from both Tyson
and McConkey. I then set out on an eight month editorial journey into the
unknown with Aaron Yanes, a relative newcomer to editing. Together -- and
then later with Skip Lievsay and Byron Wilson, the best sound engineering
team in the universe, as well as the input of producer Damon Bingham, we all
forged something very close to what I had been dreaming of. It will be a
blessing indeed if others share the excitement as well.

As Black women, there is something kinda unnatural about complimenting a woman you don’t know. Its uncomfortable for some reason. Its like there is an unspoken tension. I’ve been in social settings where groups of women will look across the room at each other, sorta wanting to mingle, but not really sure how. So each group will end up glancing at the other throughout the night, making up some misinformed story about why no one walked over and simply said “Hey girrl.”

Atlanta police have arrested a high school student and her mother in the beating of the girl's teacher.

Forty-four-year-old Georgia Thornton and her daughter, 17-year-old Sequita Thornton, have been charged with attacking Felecia Williams at Southside High School on February 28th.

According to a police report, the mother was charged with battery on a school teacher, disrupting public schools, criminal trespass and theft by taking in connection with the attack. Sequita was charged with battery on a teacher and disrupting public schools.

Atlanta Public Schools spokesman Joe Manguno says Atlanta school officials have also permanently expelled the girl and ordered her to pay $500 toward the teacher's medical expenses.

Williams said she had met with Thornton previously to discuss Sequita's grades and sporadic attendance.

On the day of the incident, Williams says the pair walked into her classroom during class and began arguing about a book. The teacher says she asked them to leave, but the mother pushed past her and grabbed a book off her desk.

According to a police report, when Williams tried to get the book back, the mother pulled the teacher's hair and threw her to the ground. Then the mother and daughter stomped on the teacher.

[starttext]
Holyfield is the younger brother of actor and dancer, Bernard Holyfield, and currently lives and trains in Fayette County, Georgia with his third wife Candi and their two children; he has at least eleven children.

By 1992, Holyfield was already a household name, announcing multiple products on television, such as Coca Cola and Diet Coke. He also had a video game released for the Sega Genesis and the Sega Game Gear: Evander Holyfield's Real Deal Boxing. After his conversion, he started professing his Christianity everywhere, reminding the public before and after his fights that he is a born-again Christian.

In 1996 Holyfield was given the opportunity to carry the Olympic torch when it was on its way to his hometown of Atlanta for that year's Olympics. October 4 of this year he was married to Dr. Janice Itson, with whom he had one child.

He founded Real Deal Records which signed the briefly successful group Exhale.

On September 22, 2007 Holyfield released the Real Deal Grill cooking appliance via TV infomercials. The Real Deal Grill is manufactured by Cirtran Corp.

Holyfield's popularity has led to numerous television appearances for the boxer. His first television show appearance was the Christmas special of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1990, playing himself. In 2005, Holyfield came in fifth place on ABC's Dancing with the Stars with his partner Edyta Sliwinska. He also made an appearance on the original BBC Strictly Come Dancing "Champion of Champions" showdown, which featured the final four teams from the 2005 edition of the British series, plus two celebrities from spinoff versions, paired with British professional dancers, one featuring Holyfield paired with Karen Hardy, and Rachel Hunter paired with Brendan Cole. Holyfield also had minor roles in three movies during the 1990s, Summer of Sam, Necessary Roughness, and Blood Salvage (which he also produced). He made a guest appearance on Nickelodeon's Figure It Out during its third season in 1994. He appeared once in an episode of Phineas and Ferb. In the episode he is an animated character but the producers wanted to make the most of Holyfield's ear, so his animated character was only given half an ear.

On August 13, 2007, Holyfield was confirmed to participate in a boxing match at World Wrestling Entertainment's Saturday Night's Main Event against Matt Hardy. He replaced Montel Vontavious Porter, who had to pull out after being diagnosed with a heart condition.

In late 2007 and early 2008, Holyfield was among a number of celebrities to be doing television ads for the restaurant chain Zaxby's.

In June 2008 a legal notice was placed by Washington Mutual Bank stating that Holyfield's $10 million, 54,000 square foot, 109 room, 17 bathroom suburban Atlanta estate would be auctioned off on July 1, 2008 due to foreclosure. Adding to his financial problems, Toi Irvin, mother of his 10 year old son, filed suit for non-payment of two months child support (he pays $3,000 per month for this child). A Utah landscaping firm also has gone to court seeking $550,000 in unpaid debt for services.

The 29-year-old son of popular TV evangelist T.D. Jakes was arrested after allegedly whipping out his private in front of two undercover vice detectives in a Dallas park last month, CBS 11 News reports.

According to a Dallas Police report, Jermaine Jakes was charged with indecent exposure on Jan. 3 after the incident at Keist Park.

The police affidavit says that Jakes walked up to one of the two detectives at the park with his pants unzipped. He then began to masturbate while making eye contact with the detective, according to the document.

Faith Johnson, an attorney for Jermaine Jakes, issued a statement that read: "We are aware of potential allegations involving Jermaine Jakes and are undertaking our own investigation of these allegations at this time. Given an apparent government investigation, we have no further comment at this time."

Jermaine’s father is the renowned pastor of the 30,000-member mega-church Potter’s House in Dallas.

After Bynum graduated from high school, she started preaching in nearby churches and at revivals. Gaining some notoriety at this point, she began a series of what she calls "Lessons in Submission".

In 1996 Bishop T.D. Jakes invited Bynum to attend one of his singles' conferences, where she rose from attendee to speaker in 2 years. In 1997, she released her No More Sheets video and audiotape series about her change of lifestyle out of sexual promiscuity. In July of 1999, Bynum re-preached "No More Sheets" at Jakes' 52,000 attendee Woman, Thou Art Loosed! Conference in Atlanta. She began appearing regularly on the Trinity Broadcasting Network as an anointed prophetess.

In 2000, Bynum taught a class on the subjects of character, submission and time management at Greater Bethel Ministries in Hempstead, New York, attended by a class of approximately 70 women. Bynum was first married in the early 1980s, but the marriage ended in divorce. In 2007, Bynum claimed that she suffered domestic abuse in that marriage, but that she had "made a vow that I would not talk about that situation because it was over 20 years ago."

Bynum married Thomas Wesley Weeks, III in 2002.Early on August 22, 2007, Bynum was allegedly beaten by her husband, who eventually pled guilty to aggravated assault charges. Should Black History Month itself fade into history? Many have long argued that African-American history should be incorporated into year-round education. Now, claims that Black History Month is outdated are gaining a new potency, as schools diversify their curricula and President Barack Obama's election opens a new chapter in the nation's racial journey.

"If Obama's election means anything, it means that African-American history IS American history and should be remembered and recognized every day of the year," says Stephen Donovan, a 41-year-old lawyer.

Ending "paternalistic" observances like Black History Month, Donovan believes, would lead to "not only a reduction in racism, but whites more ready and willing and able to celebrate our difference, enjoy our traditions, without feeling the stain of guilt that stifles frank dialogue and acceptance across cultures."

Yemesi Oyeniyi, a 40-year-old stay-at-home mother, says that Black History Month feels like it's only for blacks, "and therefore fails to educate the masses of non-blacks."

"I mean, now there is a Hispanic History Month and quite honestly I haven't paid more attention to the history of Spanish-speaking Americans any more now than I have in the past," she says. "I think it all should be taught collectively - every month."

The black historian Carter G. Woodson founded Negro History Week in 1926, seeking to build self-worth in an oppressed people, preserve a marginalized subject, and prove to a nation steeped in racism that children of Africa played a crucial role in modern civilization.

Woodson chose February because it contained the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass (which belies long-standing jokes about Black History Month being relegated to the shortest month of the year). Woodson's organization, now called the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), expanded the observance to a full month in 1976.

It has now become a fixture in American education and culture - complete with the requisite commercialism - even as the shift in labels from Negro to black to African-American indicates the evolution of attitudes meant to be shaped by the event.

Obama released an official proclamation on Feb. 2 lauding "National African American History Month" and calling upon "public officials, educators, librarians, and all the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and programs that raise awareness and appreciation of African American history."

Daryl Scott, chairman of the history department at Howard University and vice president of programming for ASALH, says Black History Month is still needed to solidify and build upon America's racial gains.

"To know about the people who make up society is to make a better society," he says. "A multiracial, multiethnic society has to work at its relationships, just like you have to work at your marriage."

"I don't see it going away," said Spencer Crew, a history professor at George Mason University, adding that a diverse year-round history curriculum can still be augmented in depth during Black History Month....continue reading

"You don't know me like that, playa" That was all it took to set it off. Chairs started flyin', 40oz malt liquor bottles flew through the air as the crowd just started wilin'. It took the bouncer to bust five shots in the air before normalcy was restored. This didn't take place at the Three 6 Mafia after party. Naw, this scene was straight outta tha Brookhaven Cultural Book Fair.

With the current state of Black culture you knew that it was only a matter of time before the "gangsta-ism" of commercial Hip Hop crept its way into the sacred realm of Black literature. While Black literature used to be like a meal from a five star restaurant off of which Black folks could feed for generations, the literature of today is more like the two wings and a biscuit deal from Church's Chicken. This new flavor of the month literature is commonly referred to as "urban literature" and it can be found any where books, magazines or malt liquor is sold.

Walking through one of those bookstores in the mall, you would be hard pressed to find even one book by Dr. John Henrik Clark or one of our other great Afrocentric scholars but it seems that any negro who can pick up a pen has their whole catalogue proudly displayed at even the most lily white book store.

The sacredness of the word has been a part of Black culture since the beginning. From the writings on the walls inside the pyramids to the Bible and other religious texts our ancestors knew the value of preserving culture for future generations. This is what makes the transformation from hieroglyphics to "Ho" stories so disturbing.

In America, Black literature has not only chronicled the freedom struggle of Black people but has been the force that sparked movements. Where would we as a people be without WEB Dubois' "Souls of Black Folks" or the "Autobiography of Malcolm X" . While music may have played a great role in our struggle it was the written word that was the foundation that gave the symbolic sound substance. The powerful music of the "conscious" Hip Hop era was not only layered with beats and samples but also with book quotations and liner notes that you could use to not only feel the music but research the facts.

The European oppressor also knew the power of the written word so that for many years they would kill you for even trying to get a little education. Even today they treat a Brotha with a book like he was holding a gat. How many times have you been chillin' in a corner by yourself not bothering anybody and some annoying white person comes up to you and starts giving you the third degree.

"Sooooo whatcha reading, Buddy....What's it about....How do you feel about...you like to read, huh, huh ???????"

So the trick has been since I can't stop you from reading, I'm going to control what you read. Although we have constantly been told how "black books don't sell" the cultural gatekeepers make sure that urban smut is in the hands of every man, woman and child.

The purpose of reading is supposed to be to expand your horizon not sentence your mind to a sensationalized hollywood inspired ghetto prison. This is especially important today when you have more Black men in prison than in college. This is perhaps the reason for the success of the various "street magazines." Although they have some very interesting articles, the over abundance of "booty shots" is mainly to service tha Brotha in prison who may not see a Sista for the next 10 years to life. One mag even has a section called "sticky pages."

The other purpose is supposed to be to relay pertinent information that will help you make positive changes in not only your own life but the world, as well not trap you in some ghetto bizzaro parallel universe where the liquor is always pouring, the rims are always spinnin' and the strip clubs never close."

You can tell a lot about a culture by what they are reading. What is it saying about Black culture when for every book celebrating the glorious history of Afrikan people you have 10 books all saying that "niggaz ain't *****."

Although, Lil' Tyrone is often criticized for knowing the words to the latest Hip Hop jam before he learns his ABC's; what about Lil Tyrone's mama who will sit down and read a book about "no good, triflin' Black men and the Ho's who love them" but can't name five famous Black people ?

I just hope that those authors that have something positive to offer to Black culture don't sell out and dumb down their messages just to sell a few paper backs. I can see it now; a thugged out, gold toothed Maya Angelou goes on Oprah to promote her new book "Tha Bitch in Me Luvs tha Thug U" with a special intro by Superhead and then stage dives into the audience.
