On Tuesday, August 4, a Manhattan judge signed an order that will see former Bad Boy recording artist and onetime Sean "Diddy" Combs protégé Jamal "Shyne" Barrow receive two-and-a-half years of post-release supervision stemming from his 2001 conviction and sentencing in the infamous Club New York case.
An attorney for Shyne — born Jamal Barrow but now going by Moses Levi after converting to Judaism while in prison — said that the order marked one of the last remaining hurdles in the way of his client's release from prison in October.
"He's about 90 percent of the way home now," attorney Oscar Michelin told MTV News following the hearing.
The district attorney's office had recommended Shyne receive the maximum amount of five years of post-release supervision (essentially probation), due to the violent nature of his crime. In June of 2001, Shyne was sentenced to 10 years in prison — the most serious charge he was found guilty of was first-degree assault, after a patron in the club was shot in the face following a melee that started between a group of clubgoers and Diddy's entourage, which included his then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez and Shyne. Shyne brandished a gun and fired shots into the air to break up the argument.
The December 1999 shooting resulted in charges being brought against both Shyne and Diddy, with both of them going to trial. The high-profile incident produced plenty of headlines, from Diddy's red-light running, high-speed exit with Lopez following the shooting to an alleged bribery plot. Shyne was a rising talent at the time, with his husky baritone reminding many in the music industry of legendary Bad Boy Records artist Notorious B.I.G. Diddy signed the youngster and was set on molding him into hip-hop's next superstar before their relationship crumbled after the trial, in which Diddy was acquitted on all counts.
In court, Michelin presented a memo he prepared in Shyne's defense, which was a combination of previous law examples that were similar to his client's case, talk of the rapper's good behavior and testimony from scholars and business executives who support the Brooklyn native's release.
"I'm grateful," a calm Shyne told the judge.
The rapper was hoping to be re-sentenced as a way to avoid post-release supervision, telling the judge that the supervision equates to "extra jail time." It was a strategy he and his lawyer proposed but the judge quickly dismissed, citing a recent court of appeals decision that changed the nature of assigned post-release supervision in New York. As a result of the ruling, a number of previous dependents in cases, including Shyne, have been issued extra supervision following their jail sentences. The judge acknowledged the rules were not in effect when Shyne was initially sentenced, but cases all over the state are now being reexamined as a result of the ruling.
In April, Shyne appeared in court for a parole hearing, hoping to be released early after serving eight years in prison — but the rapper was denied any lenience. Now the rapper has a mandatory release scheduled for October 6 of this year. The date will mark eight years and seven months served; he began his sentence in April of 2001, when he was 22 years old.
Shyne will serve the rest of his sentence at the Sullivan Correctional Facility in Fallsburg, New York.

Katt Williams has been accused of taking nearly $4,000 worth of jewelry and collectible coins from a suburban Atlanta home, but another unrelated incident involving the comedian recently surfaced. A 17-year-old claims Williams held him and "threatened" to beat him up if he left the Newman, Ga., estate where Williams lives. Officials stated that the 'Wild 'N Out' star will not be charged for the incident.
Still in search of some southern hospitality in the days following his release from jail. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports, the comedian has also been kicked out of his rented penthouse suite in Atlanta's Four Seasons hotel. Employees claimed Williams was causing a disturbance among other guests. "I haven't been here 72 hours and I'm being kicked out of the Four Seasons even though I paid up front and in cash," he said during a press conference on Thursday evening. "I don't understand. I'm at the point now where I'm standing out here with millions of dollars in movies and TV specials sold and most of them done right here in Atlanta. And to be ceremoniously dismissed at a hotel is sad."

R&B diva Alicia Keys brought the house down for a legendary performance at the Nokia Theater in Times Square that was streamed live on the worldwide web. American Express partnered with the Grammy-winning songstress for this one-night-only event in honor of World AIDS Day and Alicia’s charity Keep A Child Alive, which assists children and families in South Africa who are affected by HIV/AIDS. Miss Keys annihilated the stage for over an hour in a hit-after-hit performance, which included cuts from her new fourth studio album, The Element of Freedom, which is available December 15th.
Being that Keys is still so young, you forget how many hits this R&B chick has had since her debut in 2000 — three number one albums, four number one hits and nine top 10 hits on the Billboard charts. Keys pounded through a set list that included “Karma,” “I Ain’t Got You” and “You Don’t Know My Name.” She also included songs that weren’t huge hits but fan favorites like “Wreckless Love,” “Superwoman,” and a riveting performance of “Diary,” which she sung with the amazing Jermaine Paul, who opened the show. The New York native belted out her latest singles, “Doesn’t Mean Anything” and “Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart,” plus she sang unheard of songs from the new album like “Love Is Blind” and “Distance and Time.”
Alicia was met with some high-octane energy from the New York City crowd and she often acknowledged it, constantly thanking the audience for their undying support in her nearly 10-year career. However, the crowd hit a high when Keys sang her biggest solo hit to date, “No One.” Keys gave us a little vocal improvising, proving she is not just radio-friendly — she is soul-friendly.
We all couldn’t help but wonder if she would sing “Empire State of Mind” being that she is in New York and the song is such a massive hit — could the song be done without Jay-Z? Thankfully, no one had to worry because Jay-Z hit the stage spitting out the now legendary lyrics with Keys wailing for New York. Everyone in the packed theater went into a frenzy — no other song was more fitting for a city that has survived so much and is still celebrating the Yankees win.
An excellent performance from Keys, but the night wasn’t solely about her, as she continued to stress. American Express and Alicia Keys donated all ticket proceeds from the sold-out show to her charity Keep a Child Alive.

76 year old James Privott is back home in his Windsor Mill neighborhood where he is still recovering physically and emotionally. His wife, who refused to go on camera, said she must monitor him 24 hours a day. The couple's lawyer Renee Swafford told ABC2, "We are saddened by the events and had hoped in 2009 we would have moved further along in race relations."
As for the two teens charged in connection with the beating, police said they're still not sure why 17 year old Emmanuel Miller and 16 year old Zachary Watson became involved with Lockner. We are really not in a position to know the full extent of their beliefs or a lot about their lives," said Baltimore City Police Commissioner Fred Bealefeld. City police picked up 17 year old Emmanuel Miller and 16 year old Zachary Watson. According to charging documents, Watson implicated Miller during questioning. "They are being charged as adults, both of them being charged with attempted first degree murder and charges related to the theft of the vehicle," said Commissioner Fred Bealefeld. But the two teens will not be charged with a hate crime. Police say that falls entirely on Calvin Lockner, his Hitler tattoo and his membership to the Aryan Brotherhood. In charging documents, both teens blame Lockner for the racially-motivated beating of 76 year old James Privott while he was fishing with his wife early Tuesday. At this point, investigators say they're not sure why the teens were involved. "We are really not in a position to know the full extent of their beliefs or a lot about their lives," said the commissioner. Back on the dock at Fort Armistead Park in South Baltimore, there's relief following these new arrests. "Very good. I like to see that. We need more police patrol in this area if it is going to happen again we gotta stop it before it happens," said fisherman Patrick Rucker. But it was more than just solid police work that helped to put all three suspects in jail. The department says it was flooded with tips from the Curtis Bay community "In this case, you know people did the right thing".

[starttext]
Mike Tyson, a figure of staggering complexity and iconic impact on the
world stage, has been a friend since 1985 when he came by the set of THE
PICK UP ARTIST to meet Robert Downey. We spent hours talking-- about love,
madness, crime, sports, sex, boxing, money, and death. I was left with a
certainty that I would eventually want to use him in some future film. Fourteen
years later, I offered Tyson a role in BLACK AND WHITE which involved resisting
successive, aggressive sexual overtures by both Downey and Brooke Shields,
and, in another scene, the providing of advice to a Wu Tang Clan gangster
on murder and its possible consequences of a life in prison. Three years later, I
used Tyson again in a street scene with Neve Campbell and me in WHEN WILL
I BE LOVED.
For years I have been looking for a project that would allow for a new
form of presentation suggested by current radically shifting and radically
impatient responses to modern life and media. I wanted to make a movie
that would serve the thematic complexity and multiple layers of character
and behavior by splitting the screen into separate images moving in shape,
size, and rhythm, complicated by overlapping sources of dialogue and music.
A full portrait film with Mike Tyson as its subject not only allowed for the
exercise of that technique but actually demanded it. I approached Larry
McConkey, the world master of steadicam operators and asked him to try a
two-camera (both the Panasonic Genesis and Vericam) Hi-Def shoot of rapid
intensity. Tyson was free, willing, and--after years of vaguely planning such an
enterprise---eager.
The week passed with the expected, unexpected twists from both Tyson
and McConkey. I then set out on an eight month editorial journey into the
unknown with Aaron Yanes, a relative newcomer to editing. Together -- and
then later with Skip Lievsay and Byron Wilson, the best sound engineering
team in the universe, as well as the input of producer Damon Bingham, we all
forged something very close to what I had been dreaming of. It will be a
blessing indeed if others share the excitement as well.

successive, aggressive sexual overtures by both Downey and Brooke Shields,
and, in another scene, the providing of advice to a Wu Tang Clan gangster
on murder and its possible consequences of a life in prison.
